Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a core and an integral element in driving Action Training Academy's business. Every organization should have a Health and Safety policy and be compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. Our objective is to assist organizations in planning and OHS system implementation and First Aid systems and procedures, which can then systematically be maintained ensuring continuous compliance.

Compliance often seems daunting and the question often arises, "Where do we begin"? Listed below are the 7 stages of OHS compliance essentials in a logical order. It should however be pointed out that it might not be necessary to follow all 7 stages as your organization may already have completed certain ohs solutions within your infrastructure.

LEVEL 1 - BASELINE AUDIT
Conduct an initial "Base Line Audit" on the premises to establish what level of compliance has been reached. This involves an initial brief with a senior company representative, usually the SHE Manager, followed by a tour of the premises, post tour discussion and the submission of a proposal / quotation (within 2 working days) based on the findings of the OHS risk assessment.

Common questions covered in the audit:
  • Whether a current Risk Assessment has ever been conducted
  • Current SHE Policy, Appointments, H&S Correspondence
  • Works Instructions & Safe Operating Procedures
  • SHE Reps and Committees
  • Fire, Safety, First Aid Equipment and Staff Training
  • Emergency Evacuation Plan and Drills
  • Physical conditions in accordance with standards
Contact one of our OHS Specialists for a call out / appointment to conduct the Baseline Audit.

LEVEL 2 - HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND RISK ASSESSMENT (HIRA )
This is a comprehensive HIRA assessment, which establishes the hazards to personnel, property and the environment in your organization. It is conducted by one of our in house OHS risk assessment specialists, who spends an extensive amount of time at the organizations, assessing and gathering information and findings for the report.

A comprehensive findings report is submitted with photographs, suggested corrective actions and expected pricing structures. The ultimate objective is to ensure that if the findings are addressed and maintained, in order for the organization to adhere and comply with the OHS Act.

For OHS risk assessment solutions, contact one of our Specialists for a call out / appointment to conduct the HIRA Assessment

LEVEL 3 - OHS SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION
After the base Line Audit or HIRA assessments has been completed and submitted for consideration and approval, the corrective action plan is implemented to improve the health and safety of the organization and comply with the appropriate OHS legislation.

LEVEL 4 - OHS TRAINING
The OHS Act legally requires that a certain percentage of the organizations employee's are trained in the various OHS disciplines i.e. First Aid, Fire Fighting, Emergency Planning, HIV and Health & Safety training .

Site/ task specific training is conducted according to identified skills requirements i.e. Basic Ambulance Assistant, SAQCC, hazardous materials etc.

Contact one of our training branches for a quote or OHS Specialists for a call out / appointment to conduct the Base Line Audit to assist in determining your OHS training requirements.

LEVEL 5 - EQUIPMENT SUPPLY & COMPLIANCE
Action Training Academy has a nationally SABS approved "Fire Servicing" division which is able to send out SAQCC registered technicians or mobile workshops to you premises, to supply and install all your OHS equipment. The equipment required is supplied according to the baseline audit or according to your specific needs.

OHS Equipment :
  • Supply, Install and Maintain Fire Fighting Equipment (Extinguishers & Hose Reels)
  • Supply and Install First Aid Supplies (Regulation 3 and 7)
  • OHS Directional Signage and emergency evacuation floor / building plans
  • Emergency service jump kits (BLS, ILS and ALS)
Contact one of our Fire Servicing Workshops / SAQCC technicians to place a servicing or equipment order or for a Fire Servicing call out / appointment.

LEVEL 6 - EMERGENCY AND EVACUATION PLANNING
This is an excellent means of ensuring a prepared working environment, which will ultimately reduce loss of life and property should an emergency incident occur.

Emergency and Evacuation Response procedures are designed according to the organizations premises and staff locations. Staff are appointed and trained to carry out certain emergency duties, which are based on the OHS training skills. Evacuation assembly areas are designated and floor plans are drawn, printed and mounted, showing equipment locations, evacuation routes and assembly areas. The emergency practice drills are normally conducted every 3 to 6 months depending on the level of preparedness.

Contact one of our OHS Specialists to discuss your emergency evacuation plan.

LEVEL 7 - EVALUATION, REVIEW AND APPROVAL
The effectiveness of the system is measured by conducting audits and establishing qualitative and quantitative measures based on the results of the audit. An OHS system and standards should be reviewed on an ongoing basis and as soon as a nonconformance is detected, corrective and remedial action must be taken.
